He tells you what will fit and what will not. If a small under-sink unit does what you want, he says so rather than selling you a mains system. You get a written price before anything starts, and if you would rather think about it, you owe nothing. That is the whole process.
The three questions that decide the job
Almost every filtration enquiry in Gosnells comes down to these.
Do you want filtered drinking water, or filtered water everywhere?
Drinking water is an under-sink unit and a dedicated tap at the kitchen. Everywhere is a unit at the mains where the water enters the property, which also means the shower, the washing machine and the hot water system. They are different jobs at very different scales.
What is under your sink right now?
The cabinet has to hold the unit, the isolation valve has to be sound, and there has to be somewhere sensible to run the tube. On the older Gosnells houses this is the part that decides the answer.
Are you on scheme water, or a bore?

Why Gosnells is two suburbs in one
This is the part a filter catalogue cannot tell you, and it changes the job more than the brand of cartridge does.
Gosnells was orchards, market gardens and poultry farms well into the last century. About 7,500 people lived here in the 1950s and 9,504 when it became a Shire in 1961. Then it went up fast. Much of the old townsite — the streets off Albany Highway and around the two stations — is 1960s and 70s housing.
Those houses have been through several rounds of plumbing since. The cupboard under the sink is usually smaller than a modern one, the isolation valve on the cold feed is often original, and the benchtop may well be the third one fitted. None of that is a problem, but it does mean a filter install here is rarely a matter of opening a box and connecting two fittings. We look at the valve, the space and the run before we price it, not after.
The other Gosnells is newer. The council's own figures have the City growing from 69,500 people in 1991 to 105,000 in 2011, and the growth inside the suburb itself has come largely from flats and apartments. Add the newer pockets running toward Southern River and you get modern pipework, bigger cupboards and a much more straightforward install — where the constraint is usually strata rules or available space rather than the age of anything.
At the 2021 Census 21,149 people lived in Gosnells, and at the 2016 count 82.4% of the occupied homes were separate houses. So most of our work here is a standalone home with one mains entry and one kitchen sink — but which of the two Gosnells it sits in changes the quote.
What is actually in Perth water
Worth knowing before you spend anything.
Perth's Integrated Water Supply Scheme, which feeds Gosnells, is a blend. Roughly 44.6% of it is groundwater, 36% is desalinated seawater and 18.7% is surface water, with a small amount of groundwater replenishment on top. The proportions shift through the year. That is the honest reason tap water here can taste different in March to how it tasted in September without anything being wrong.
Water Corporation puts elevated hardness at 200 mg/L under the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, and hard water is what leaves scale in a kettle and in a hot water system, and what makes soap harder to lather. Filtration is not a cure for everything in that list — some of it is dissolved minerals rather than particles — and we will tell you plainly which part of your complaint a filter will fix and which part it will not.
If the problem is taste, smell or chlorine, an under-sink unit usually handles it. If it is scale and appliances, that is a different conversation and a bigger unit. Ring and describe what is actually bothering you.

What is the average cost to install a water filter system?
There is no single figure, and anyone quoting one without seeing the kitchen is guessing. It depends on the type of system, whether the tap needs a new hole drilled, the state of the isolation valve, and where the unit has to go. How much does it cost to install a water filter tap?

A mains system costs more than an under-sink one, because the housing is bigger, the plumbing is heavier and the location has to be prepared. What are the disadvantages of a whole house water filter?
It costs more to buy and more to maintain, because the cartridges are larger. It needs a physical spot near the mains entry, under cover, with room to actually change the cartridge. And it does not produce the same drinking water as a dedicated under-sink unit — a mains filter treats everything reasonably, while an under-sink unit treats one tap thoroughly. Plenty of homes end up with both.
Do you need a plumber to install an under sink water filter?
For a permanent connection to the mains, yes — that is plumbing work, and it should be done by someone licensed to do it. Our plumbing licence is 8396. A push-on kit that clips over a tap spout is a different thing, but it is also not what most people mean when they ask.
How often should a water filtration cartridge be changed?
It depends on the cartridge and on how much water goes through it, so the honest answer is that the manufacturer's interval is a starting point and your household decides the rest. What you tend to notice first is the flow dropping off at the filtered tap, or the taste coming back. Either of those is worth a call. Cartridge replacement
What is the downside of reverse osmosis water?
It is slower — water goes through a membrane into a small tank rather than straight to the tap — and it sends some water to the drain doing it. It also takes more room under the sink than a cartridge filter, and it strips dissolved minerals as well as the things you wanted gone. What is the most effective filtration system for bore water?
Different equipment entirely to a drinking water filter, because bore water is untreated groundwater from the shallow aquifer rather than treated scheme water.
