Which water filter do I actually need?
It comes down to what is bothering you. If it is the taste, the smell or the chlorine in your drinking water, an under-sink filter at the kitchen is usually the whole answer and the cheapest correct one. If the problem shows up in the shower, the laundry or on your fittings, that is a mains question and a kitchen filter will not touch it. If the water in question is coming from a garden bore rather than the mains, it is a different system again.
What is the average cost to install a water filter system?
There is no single figure, and a price quoted without seeing the kitchen is a guess. It depends on the system, the state of the isolation valve, the room in the cabinet, and whether a hole needs drilling for the tap. The visit to work it out is free, the quote is free, and the price is in writing before anything starts.
How much does it cost to install a water filter tap?
Same answer at a smaller scale. What moves the figure is whether your sink or benchtop already has a spare hole and what the benchtop is made of — stone, laminate and stainless are all drilled differently. We look, we price it in writing, and there is no call-out fee for the look.
How much does a complete home water filtration system cost in Perth?
More than an under-sink unit, because the housing is larger, the plumbing is heavier and the position has to be prepared. Beyond that it is specific to your property — where the water enters, what it enters through, and whether there is a sensible sheltered spot with clearance to change a cartridge. You get the figure on site at no charge.
What are the disadvantages of a whole house water filter?
It costs more to buy and more to run, because the cartridges are bigger. It needs a genuine physical location near the mains entry, under cover, with room to service it. And it does not give you the same drinking water as a dedicated under-sink unit — a mains filter treats everything reasonably, an under-sink unit treats one tap thoroughly. A lot of Gosnells homes end up with both.
Do you need a plumber to install an under sink water filter?
For a permanent connection into the mains, yes. That is plumbing work and it should be done by somebody licensed to do it. Our plumbing licence is 8396. It also matters for the next person — a filter installed with proper isolation can be serviced later without cutting anything.
How often should a water filtration cartridge be changed?
The manufacturer's interval is the starting point, and your household decides the rest. A house of five gets through a cartridge faster than a house of one. What you notice first is the flow dropping off at the filtered tap, or the taste coming back. Either is worth a call, and we service systems we did not install.
What happens if I leave a cartridge too long?
It stops being effective well before it stops passing water, so for a while you have a filter that is functioning as a length of pipe. Flow keeps falling until using the tap becomes annoying. The other thing that happens is that the housing seal ages whether the cartridge is changed or not, and an old seal often weeps once it is finally disturbed — which is how a lot of people discover the cupboard base has swollen.
What is the downside of reverse osmosis water?
It is slower, because water passes through a membrane into a small tank rather than straight to the tap. It sends some water to the drain as part of how it works. It takes more room under the sink than a cartridge filter — the tank is the bit people do not expect. And it removes dissolved minerals generally, not selectively.
Will a filter fix hard water?
Not a cartridge filter, no, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling it. Water Corporation puts elevated hardness at 200 mg/L under the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, and hardness is dissolved minerals rather than particles — it is what furs up a kettle and makes soap harder to lather. Carbon cartridges handle particles, chlorine, taste and smell. A reverse osmosis membrane works at a different scale. We will tell you which part of your complaint is which.
Why does my water taste different at different times of year?
Because the supply changes. Perth's Integrated Water Supply Scheme is a blend of roughly 44.6% groundwater, 36% desalinated seawater and 18.7% surface water, plus a little groundwater replenishment, and the proportions shift through the year. Nothing has gone wrong — it is genuinely not the same water in every season.
Can you service a filter somebody else installed?
Yes, and a lot of what we do in Gosnells is exactly that. Matching the right cartridge to a housing that has been under a sink for years is most of the work, and we do it from the housing rather than from a label that is usually unreadable by then.
What is the most effective system for bore water?
Different equipment entirely, because bore water is untreated groundwater from the shallow aquifer rather than treated scheme water. About one in four Perth gardens runs off one. What suits depends on what your particular bore is delivering — sediment, dissolved iron and smell are three separate problems and they are not solved by the same thing. It is a look-first job.
Can bore water be connected to the house supply?
No. Bore water and scheme water stay physically separate, and that separation is a requirement rather than a preference. It is one of the reasons bore work belongs with a licensed plumber.
Do you work weekends or after hours?
No. Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 4:00pm. We would rather say that plainly than have you find out at the wrong moment.
Do you charge to come out and quote?
No. $0 call-out fee and a free quote. You get the price in writing before any work starts, and if you would rather not go ahead you owe nothing.
