The call that starts with a cupboard

A filter is a set of joins in your drinking water line. The housing seal, the push-fit connections, the isolation valve and the tail to the filtered tap are all places water can get out, and they let go slowly rather than dramatically. By the time anyone notices, the chipboard base has usually swelled and the cabinet is the expensive part of the problem, not the filter.

Sediment and the mains question
The other pattern here is people whose complaint is not really about the kitchen at all.
Sediment or discolouration showing at more than one outlet, marks on fittings, something that turns up in the bathroom as well as the sink — none of that is fixed by an under-sink filter, because an under-sink filter treats one tap. It is a mains question, and the answer is a housing fitted where the water enters the property.
That is a bigger job. The unit is larger, the cartridges cost more, and it needs a sheltered, accessible spot where a cartridge can actually be changed. What the supply actually is
Worth understanding before spending anything.
Perth's Integrated Water Supply Scheme, which feeds Beckenham, is a blend of roughly 44.6% groundwater, 36% desalinated seawater and 18.7% surface water, plus a small amount of groundwater replenishment. The proportions change through the year, so the water genuinely is not the same in every season. That accounts for a good share of the "something has changed with our water" calls we take.
Water Corporation puts elevated hardness at 200 mg/L under the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. Hardness is dissolved minerals — what scales a kettle, what makes soap hard to lather — and cartridge filters do not remove it. Carbon cartridges deal with particles, chlorine, taste and smell. Drinking water done properly
For most Beckenham households the answer is still the simple one.
An under-sink cartridge filter in the kitchen cupboard, plumbed off the cold feed, running to its own small tap on the sink. It handles taste, smell and chlorine well, it takes a corner of the cabinet rather than the whole thing, and servicing it later is a short visit.
The things that decide the job are the room in the cupboard, the state of the isolation valve, and whether there is a hole in the sink or benchtop for the tap.
